Why was Coach Ben Wade fired from his real job as a Soccer coach while he competed on Survivor
We will never know what happened between Coach Wade, SBU, and Brent Good and why coach's contract was not renewed (fired if you choose to say). That will only be between Coach and Brent Good. But it is interesting how it all went down and how it was very unprofessional on how SBU's athletic website dealt with it:SBU's athletic director Brent Good said the reason was that Wade did not tell him that he was leaving the team with two weeks left to go in the season to be on the show. Wade did not return to the campus until eight weeks later. (Note: this is likely because Survivor doesn't allow contestants to return home until taping is over so you don't know who wonnot because it means he's a shooin to win.)
Survivor's Ben Wade Fired By SBU
According to a Springfield NewsLeader report, Southwest Baptist University's women's soccer coach Ben Wade has been fired because he appeared on Survivor.
SBU's athletic director Brent Good said the reason was that Wade did not tell him that he was leaving the team with two weeks left to go in the season to be on the show. Wade did not return to the campus until eight weeks later. (Note: this is likely because Survivor doesn't allow contestants to return home until taping is over so you don't know who wonnot because it means he's a shooin to win.)
Wade, who was surprised by the University's decision, said he's moving to California to take over as conductor of a Symphony. (Wade is a world class trumpeter.)
While I can understand SBU's decision and perhaps their feeling betrayed because the coach didn't tell them where he was going I'm surprised they would blow this golden opportunity to promote SBU on a national scale. Now,asics running shoes, instead of being known as the University of Ben Wade, they'll be known as the school that fired him because he went on Survivor. I just have this gut feeling it will be used against SBU by rival schools when trying to land athletes for their sports programs. ("Hey, why go to a school that punishes success like they did Ben Wade when he made Survivor?")
Still, the University has a code to uphold so as long as they hold everyone else to the same standard they held Ben Wade everything should be fine. You know, every administrator that has stretched numbers on an expense report or professor that changed a grade to help a student when they really didn't earn the higher grade getting run out of the school as well. If that's the case, then good for SBU for keeping consistent in their policies.
SBU athletic director Brent Good said the school bought out the remaining three months of Wade's contract because Wade did not tell Good that he left the team at midseason to be on television.
"He said he was going to be gone for a week," Good said. "And the week went beyond that, which went beyond that, which went beyond that."
Good said Wade left the team on Oct. 22 with two weeks left in the season to go to the Brazilian Highlands to shoot the 18th season of the hit reality show. He returned to campus eight weeks later, on Dec. 17.
